We can meet at the Intuit parking lot off Governor Drive on the I-805. Once we're ready, we can take the 52 to the 67 to Wildcat Canyon.

We’ve never driven down the infamous Orteg Highway. It was even featured on national news for it’s popularity by the motorcyclist. Our group will meet at the north bound rest stop located a few miles north of Oceanside in the middle of Camp Pendleton. We will depart the rest stop at 8:15 so if your running late be sure and call my cell phone so we won’t leave without you. Other roads we will be driving for the day will include some of the clubs favorites, Mt Palomar, Mesa Grande, Engineer Rd. and the Sunrise Highway. There will be plenty of great photo opportunities when we stop to stretch our legs. Our day will conclude at Veijas Casino for a late lunch and a bit of socializing. Afterwards there are the shops of Veijas’ Outlet mall.

The San Diego Automotive Museum and the San Diego Car Club Council present “The Greatest Show on Turf” on Saturday, June 3, 2006.

This amazing show has been an annual event in Balboa Park for years. The corner of Park Boulevard and President’s Way becomes a sea of vintage cars, modified vehicles, and motorcycles. See woodies, tuners, low riders, street rods, and classics.

The show will run from 9:00 AM until 2:30 PM. The event is free to the public. Trophies will be presented at 2:00 PM.

There is no organized attendance to this show by our club. It was mentioned to me by a member so I wanted to share it with all. I know it conflicts with the 2-day autox.

(06/01/06) EVENT UPDATED: America’s Festival of Speed @ 10/7/2006, 8:00007

America’s Festival of Speed

Back by popular demand, I want to get head start on organizing our club to attend the Speedfest. Let's see if we can have our greatest turn out yet!

Date: Saturday and Sunday, October 7 and 8, 2006
Time: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day
Location: Naval Air Station, North Island, Coronado

Event Description:
Set against the stunning backdrop of San Diego Bay, the eighth annual Festival of Speed will feature 225 of the world’s most unique and pedigreed machines at one of the most distinctive stages, Naval Base Coronado, the birthplace of Naval Aviation. A spectator-friendly 1.6 mile course is constructed in a matter of days on the runways and taxiways of Naval Base Coronado.

The vintage racecars are chosen to compete on the basis of their historical significance and certified authenticity. Some of the cars on the track are valued in the millions of dollars and, unlike most racing events, fans are invited to tour the pits and speak with the drivers of these unique machines. An enthusiastic gathering of 20,000 fans is expected to be on hand to take a step back in time to enjoy auto racing’s rich history.

The Speed Festival is hosted by the Navy Region Southwest and the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program. MWR retains revenue generated by tickets sold to the Military and a percentage of the overall revenue generated by the event. They in turn provide positive support for the active duty military community and their families through Quality of Life Programs including single Sailor Recreation Centers, Fitness and Aquatic Facilities and the Base Theatre Free Movies. The Southern California community is given this unbelievable opportunity to thank the men and women defending our freedom in person.

JD here, Last year I organized this event and arranged for coral passes for club member. I will take the lead this year also. Coral passes are numbered and I have to provide our numbers to the race organizers well in advance. Any member that wishes to park inside the coral will need to RSVP as attending at the bottom of the post. I’ll post more information as the event nears so keep your eye on the website.

(09/18/05) EVENT UPDATED: Vintage Car Race - NAS North Island Speed Festival @ 10/8/2005, 08:00 AMEmpiric1
Saturday 8 Oct & Sunday 9 Oct 2005

The Speed Festival has been a recurring event at NAS for the last eight years, growing in the number of entrants and spectators annually. Put together by General Racing Ltd. and led by the efforts of Steve Earle, who pioneered vintage racing when he started the Monterey Historic Automobile Races in 1974, the event that brings young and old to witness firsthand the beauty and power of these historic automotive creations. For some, the event brings back fond memories of a time when they first saw the cars barreling down a straightaway at the Indy 500; for others it's simply an awe-inspiring sight to watch vintage racers restored to as-good-as-new condition be used as their makers intended.

The racing is divided into eight categories and features over 200 of the world's top vintage racecars. The first group is comprised of pre-1941 sports and racing automobiles and included a 1927 Bugatti T-35B, a 1025 Vauxhall 30-98, a 1932 Miller-Ford and a 1934 MG-N. In the second group the 1947 to 1955 sports and racing cars: a 1950 Allard J2, a 1951 Hudson Hornet, a 1955 Porsche 550, and a pair of 1954 Maserati A6GCSs are some of the entrants. The 1955 to 1960 sports racing cars in the third racing group. Some cars in this group are a 1955 D-Type Jaguar, a 1958 Ferrari 250TR, a 1959 Lotus 11, and a 1960 Lola Mk1. The fourth group consisted of 1956 to 1962 production sports cars and includes a few Corvettes from 1957 and 1958, several Porsche 356As from 1956 to 1958, and a 1962 Alfa-Romeo SS. Group five consistes of production sports cars over 2000cc from 1962 to 1966. A 1963 and a few 1964 Cobras run this race alongside some 1966 Shelby GT-350s and a few 1964 and 1965 Sunbeam Tigers, as well as a 1964 Jaguar E-Type. Group six consistes of sports racing and production cars under 2000-cc's from 1962 to 1966. In this pack run two 1963 Lotus 23 Bs, a few Ginetta G4s and G4 Rs from 1962 to 1965, and a 1965 Le Grand Mk4B. Group seven is the Can-Am and FIA sports car class from 1966 to 1972. They include a 1972 Pantera, a 1966 Ford GT-40, and a McLaren M1B and M6B from 1966 and 1968, respectively. Group eight form the Historic Trans-Am cars from 1966 to 1972. This group included three Boss 302 Mustangs from 1969; a few Camaro Z28s from 1967, 1969, and 1970; a 1968 Porsche 911; and a 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV.

Behind the main grandstand last year was an endless slew of automobile clubs representing everything from Ferraris and Jaguars to Porsches, BMWs, Vipers, Mustangs and MINI Coopers. There were 87 car clubs in attendance, bringing the number of vehicles on display somewhere in the range of 2000. While most of the cars on display had undergone meticulous 100-point restoration processes, some were simply pristine examples that had been well cared for and had simply aged as gracefully as a bottle of fine Bordeaux. As a backdrop to all the vehicles were static displays of some of the Navy's vintage aircraft, an added effect to the surreal experience.

If your a member of the SDBMWCCA there will be reserved coral spots for those who RSVP. Cunningham BMW host a BBQ for BMWCCA members.

(02/15/05) EVENT POSTED: BMW Z Car Homecomming @ 8/2/2005Empiric1
If you've never heard of Homecoming let me fill you in. The Z3 was manufactured in Spartanburg, NC not in Germany. The great folks at BMW started inviting owners of the U.S. made roadster to come back to the factory. Before they knew what hit them Homecoming had achieved a cult following. Today the small town of Spartanburg is inundated every Labor Day weekend with thousands of Z car enthusiast. Homecoming has grown every year and now Z Car Clubs from around the country round up and train together on their way to North Carolina. Each time a Z Club joins the group they lead the train on some of their favorite twisting roads. Highlights of the weekend are a Welcoming reception, factory tours, Zentrum (Z Car Museum), BMW test drives, factory sponsored fix-it day, live bands, after factory modification concourse and concluded with a dinner banquet. That is the official BMW sponsored events. Unofficial events climax with those brave drivers challenging the Dragon. A stretch of twisting highway not far from the city which boast the largest number of turns per mile in the continental U.S. So, ask your self, "why haven't I been to homecoming yet".

(04/29/03) Kings Canyon "SNOWED OUT"bdougr
Guys,

Sorry to say but Kings Canyon and Sequoia parks have gotten the most snow since 1982. Since I know none of our cars can even put chains on it..... it would be just too dangerous to make the attempt.

Please Call the reservation desk now and cancel your room.

Simon reports there are only three reservations above my original eight.

(03/13/03) Bimmerfest 2003 - Santa Barbarapurplez
Bimmerfest is an annual BMW event held in Santa Barbara, California at Cutter Motors BMW.

This year's event will be on Saturday, April 12th. This event is a great opportunity to meet other BMW drivers, old friends, online buddies, as well as a chance to see the latest modifications and alterations being made to BMW's. There will also be vendor booths there. Hundreds of BMW's will make the trek out to Santa Barbara for the weekend, so it should be a very funexperience.

The Los Angeles ZSCCA club will meet in Santa Monica at 8:30 AM for the start of the
journey and we invite all BMW cars to join us. With the amount of traffic we are expecting, the drive should take about 3 hours or so. We are still working on the exact meeting spot, but it will most likely be in the parking lot below the Santa Monica Pier, off the 10 Freeway East.
(03/10/03) Rides of March Autocross pics posted in Gallerypurplez
Pictures are posted in the gallery for the Rides of March Autocross.

The San Diego Region BMW Car Club of America Autocross the "Rides of March" was held on 03/08/2003. This was another well run autocross that was held in conjunction with a skills school. There were 80 autocrossers and 20 cars in the skills school. Skills school participants worked on straight and curve braking, dry and wet skidpad handling, and cornering skills. In the afternoon skills school participants came over and ran the autocross course.

The autocross itself was, as usual, great fun. C stock class was won by a stock 2.3 Z3. He did some great driving and showed a lot of skill.

Note that we are not including driver names or detailed descriptions of cars because one local BMW dealer has been monitoring autocross participation and noting it on service records in order to possibly deny warranty coverage.

(02/10/03) EVENT POSTED: BayAreaZ/SanDiegoZ Badges @ 1/1/1901, n/awyu
THIS IS NOT AN EVENT! We are using the Event attendance mechanism to automate the badge printing process.

After some discussion (see the first few messages of the comments), I threw together the following template:
This badge draws the following information from your profile:
  • Name: Real Name -- due to space considerations, the last name will be reduced to a single letter
  • Copilot: same as above
  • Alias: Alias
  • Text1: Line 1 of your Z3 description
  • Text2: Line 2 of your Z3 description
  • Picture 1: The minimum width:height ratio is 1.33. This means for a image 320 pixels across, the maximum height cannot exceed 240 -- otherwise the badge may exceed specified sizes and roll over to another page. (Other resolutions: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960, 2048x1536) The height can be smaller though as the image will then simply be centered.
This badge template requires the font Impact to display correctly. If you don't have this font, you can download at: impact.ttf.

After updating your profile, you can preview the badge by clicking the link at the top of the profile editing page. If you like what you see, mark your attendance status for this "event" as Yes. When we are ready to print, we will use the following URL which automatically picks up everybody who lists themselves as attending this event and pulls the latest profile information to put 3x3 badges on per 8.5x11 page. Check the following link to see how your badge will print! After I print your badge, I will move you to the "No" section. Getting a hold of your badge will require you attend an event.

  • (02/01/03) Mid-Winter Desert Tour - Pics Posted in Gallerypurplez
The Mid-Winter Desert Tour was a success and we had a great turnout - the best so far for SDZ3. Pics are posted in the gallery. Thanks David for planning this one.

We had a total of 10 cars: 6-Z3s, 1 M-Coupe, 1 M-Roadster, and 2-M3 convertibles. Great cars and a great bunch of folks!

We had a great time, meeting in Pine Valley, a visit to the Motor Transport Museum, a stop for Chocolate at the Wisteria Candy Cottage and on to Lunch at Camacho's in El Centro. The temperatures ranged from the low 70's to the low 90's in the desert.

If you have more pics - you can send them to me. Also, remember to post your own pics in your user profile.

We are already discussing the next drive. If you have ideas, post to the forum.

    (10/12/02) EVENT POSTED: Veterans Day Parade - Host a Dignitary in your Z3 @ 11/11/2002, 08:30purplez
I copied this info from "JoKuhl's" post on the forum. It'd be great of we can participate.

With a theme of "Let Us Not Forget!", the 2002 edition of the San Diego Veterans Day Parade, will be held on Harbor Drive from Grape Street to Seaport Village. The Parade is developing into a major event, with numerous floats and rolling displays, military vehicles, marching bands, military and veterans units. We will be celebrating the sacrifices made by our Veterans, past and present.

As always, there will be dignitaries, which is where the San Diego Z3 owners come in! This is a perfect venue for you to demonstrate your community spirit, and advertise our Z3 club! BMW owners have contributed significantly to the success of the parade over the past few years, and come to the Parades' rescue on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the past. We have several prominent dignitaries slated for this year's Parade, ranging from highly decorated Veterans, to former Prisoners of War and Medal of Honor recipients. My darling wife JoAnna had the pleasure of transporting USMC Colonel Jay Vargas, Medal of Honor recipient and Vietnam Veteran, in her Z3 in last years' Parade.

All of the Dignitaries are fully aware of each driver's personal preferences as to seating in the vehicle (i.e. rear deck vs. passenger seat). Placards will be provided for the Dignitaries, you are encouraged to decorate your car in patriotic themes if you desire. All participants will run in the Parade, even if we run out of dignitaries! We are particularly looking for convertibles and roadsters.

Staging begins at 8:30 A.M. Directions to the check in point on the corner of Ash Street and Harbor Drive follow:

I-5 from the north: Take Pacific Highway off ramp, continue south on Pacific Highway to Ash Street (just past back side of County Administration Building on your right), right on Ash Street (west) one block to Harbor Drive (check-in point),

I-5 from the south: Take the "Cruise Ship Terminal/Airport exit (Hawthorne), west on Hawthorne to Pacific Highway, left (south) on Pacific Highway to Ash Street (just past back side of County Administration Building on your right), right on Ash Street (west) one block to Harbor Drive (check-in point).

Vehicles will be staging northbound on Harbor Drive just off the southwest corner of the County Administration Building.

Email or call Scott to register to participate in the event.

    (09/21/02) Site update8
I added some requested links, as well as a couple more 7/27 autocross photos.

But the biggest update is the addition of flyers (see the link at the top). Please take a look at these, and if you want to help our little community grow, go ahead and print some out and distribute them to whoever you might think would be interested. Wyu from the Bay Area chapter found a lot of success in simply leaving small flyers on the windshields of parked Zs.

Good luck, and if you have any more ideas for getting the word out, let everyone know.

    (08/16/02) Links page8
I got the links page up -- basically just combined a list Greg sent me with the list on BayAreaZ3.com. If anyone has something to add, let me know!
    (08/08/02) Autocross photos8
I just posted Greg's photos from the 7/27 Autocross, check them out ("Gallery"). If anyone else has photos, you can send them to me to post. Also it'd be great if we could get a photo of every member with their car to put in the profile section.

This would be a good time to get the "Links" section going, so why don't we use this thread for suggestions for links. One obvious one is http://www.bmwcca.org/.
(07/29/02) EVENT POSTED: BMWCCA Autocross at Qualcomm @ 9/7/2002, 7:00AMRich Murphy
This is an autocross sponsored by the BMWCCA to be held in the WEST lot at Qualcomm Stadium. We can also use this as our next meeting to discuss club business and ideas over lunch.

Anyone interested is invited to attend. The entry fee is $45 but includes lunch for the driver. There is no charge for spectating so even if you don't know anything about autocrossing or don't want to run, please feel free to stop by and meet other San Diego Z3 and BMW enthusiasts.

We had three cars at the last autocross and Warren finished second in class! A M-Z3 coupe took Top Time of the Day! Look out M3s!

More information can be found by following the link below that explains the format of the event.

    (07/28/02) Autocross turnoutpurplez
The autocross was a lot of fun. My first time entering an autocross. I did okay but didn't place. Warren, who drove down from Fullerton, placed 2nd in the 6-cylinder stock category. Nice driving!

There were a few Z3's and many M coupes and roadsters. Note that there were NO Z3's in the May autocross. This time, Z3's took first and second place in Class C. All the drivers were very friendly and I got a lot of good info about driving in this kind of event.

Rich stopped by but had just returned from out of town so was unable to enter (next time, eh?). Rich's co-pilot - his very young son, liked watching the cars and the trolley when it went by.

I took some pics and will get them posted after I get the film (no - I don't have a digital camera yet!) developed. Some of the action photos may be a bit blurry because I was working the back sweeping turn and most of the cars were moving very fast through that part of the course. If any of you got good pics - please email to me and I will get them posted.

I'll have more details after the SDBMWCCA posts the final results.

    (07/18/02) new site8
As you can see, I have started implementing the new site, including a changed menu and new intro graphics. Feedback is still welcome.

I still have a few things to figure out, and I'll probably have to bug Wyu about it. Thanks again to William for loaning us the code from his www.BayAreaZ3.com site, and for hosting this one as well.

(07/11/02) EVENT POSTED: BMWCCA Autocross at Qualcomm - Let's Meet There! @ 7/27/2002, 07:00:00Rich Murphy
The BMWCCA is hosting an autocross at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday July 27th. I think this would be a great time to get together and talk about the club as well as recruit other Z3 enthusiasts.

The link below provides information and a further link to how events are run. If you haven't run an auto-X before, it would be a great time to start. My advice is to get there VERY early and plan on catching a few Z's (ha!) in the parking lot before the driving begins.

There is a lot of down time at an autocross and we should have plenty of time to talk about the club and get some of the next events organized.

I have a pop-up canopy and perhaps we can put up a sign "www.SDZ3.com" to let people know about the club.

We want to acknowledge the extremely generous contribution of William Yu of the BayAreaZ3 club in the development and hosting of this site and for getting the wheels rolling for the local club.

    (06/04/02) Back from San Diego...wyu
The Z3 owners down there were mostly nice guys and they were able to convince me to host their domain. So instead of going to sleep after getting back from driving for hours and hours on straight, I immediately started ripping apart my BayAreaZ3.com code. 4 hours later, my codebase now theoretically supports an infinite number of local Z3 chapters. Please give a hearty welcome to the folks at:All accounts registered at BayAreaZ3.com also work at SanDiegoZ3.com. (BA Members = SD Visitors and vice versa.)

Pictures have been posted in the Gallery section (on the SD Z3 site); the following link will take you there.
